HOPE

Hope is like stars
Sometimes it is shining bright
Sometmes it hides under the blanket of dark night

With a bright blast when a star is born in the night
You see a hope born in front of your sight

We dont know when they were born
We dont know how long we will see them
We dont know when they will die
But it makes life easier just to see them
In front of our eye.

Shine my hope, cos you are my star
You will pull me from the darkness
And take me afar

In the universe of my life
Many hopes are shining bright
The thought of losing them gives me a fright

Im scared, Im unsure
I dont want my hopes to turn into a flaw
But im going to hold on tight
I am not going to leave without a fight

I will nurture my hopes with hard work and effort
My stars will live, they will be of worth
One day im sure, my hopes will shine on this earth.

Angels In My Life

Angels exist, I know, they do
They watch over us quietly, yes I know, they do

For when my life is in deep sorrow
and I don't know from whom help can I borrow
there comes an angel in some form or the other
he may not lift my sorrow but he does give me a hope for tomorrow

when your friends turn our back on you
and you do not know what to do
don't cry for they are not worth your tears
but keep an eye for that angel
who will help you lessen your fears

cos he's your real friend, your true guide to your soul
he will help you lift the clouds from your goal

how do I recognize these angels you say?
listen to your heart; it will not let you astray
these angels accept you for who you are
they don't try and change you, they love you even if you are afar

they will be your pillars, silent and strong
they will be there for you should anything go wrong
they will say less but do more
they will not hesitate to drown just to take you ashore

my angels know as I talk about them to you
they know its them I'm referring to
my angels I promise you ill be there for you today and tomorrow
to be your support in happiness and in sorrow

those friends who promised will be there for me and now are gone
look at my angels and you'll know you did wrong
mend your ways, ill tell you
friends can become angels too....

Rain...

What to you is rain?
to people it is water
but to me it is a song, it is a pain
for when those drops fall on the ground
memories come running to me, memories that hound

When I was small, memories were not a pain
they were like a fresh flower,
a paper without a stain
I jumped in the puddles
I washed my face with rain
I gleed as I watched
my paper boat sail down in the water lane

Youth brought romance with the rain
as I waited for that letter
sitting by the window pane
the smell of wet mud is fresh in my mind
the memories of it haunt me
im not able to leave it behind

That simple life, that mother's lap
even if I pawn myself will I be able to get it back?
go away memories, go away beautiful rain
don't remind me of the happiness
that makes me realize my pain...

My Eyes....

The eyes, they speak so much...
they tell the story of your heart
whether you are happy or whether you are sad
your eyes tell them apart

Look, she is so happy, she's got everything
but does she have something
to which her joy can bring?
Look into her eyes
do you see her silent cries?

If you see, then let her free
let her go home, to where she belongs
where she is free, where see sings her songs

She thought her path was right
but soon her day turned into night
and now she awaits for an angel unknown
who will catch her hand and take her home....

THE IRANIANS BEFORE ZARATHUSHTRA WAS BORN

We parsis often wonder how our ancestors must have looked like, or who must our ancestors be and how did they live in those times...Ours being the oldest religion in the world it is very hard for us youngsters to imagine how our ancestors must be like. I have some information regarding our ancestors and I shall share it with my readers.

Almost 4,000 years ago there lived a tribe of herdsmen in ancient Iran. The Iranian people were nomadic, that is they did not live in a fixed place but moved from place to place in search of food as well as good pastures for their cattle.

Our forefathers were tall, fair, well-built with dark brown/black hair and hooked noses. They wore long robes to shield themselves from the hot sun during the day and from the bitter cold in the night.

The Iranian people were divided into 2 socially distinct classes, that were based upon their occupations. The first was the PRIESTLY class, who were supported by the rest of the population, mainly made up of HERDSMEN who became WARRIORS as and when the need arose.

The ancient Iranians did not have any recognizable religion before prophet ZARATHUSHTRA was born. There existed many cults in which were worshipped many gods and goddesses, who were sometimes peace, prosperity and happiness, and when they were wicked, famine, disease, destruction and death were brought upon the people. They worshipped a series of nature gods and goddesses who looked after the skies, water, earth, plants, animals, man and fire.

However they had 3 very important Gods:
1. MITHRA-- THE LORD OF CONTRACT: whom they believed supervised agreements made between men.

2. VARUNA-- THE LORD OF SOLEMN OATHS: whom the Indo-Iranians recognized as being the overseer of promises.

3. ASURA-- The lord whom they worshipped to be the basic force of Order, which later came to be identified as Wisdom.

The people were frightened that if the gods and goddesses were not worshipped and given appropriate sacrifices, then the wrath of the gods would bring misfortune and misery upon them.

The Indo-Iranians had no fixed places of worship, as they moved from area to area constantly. Therefore they had no temple or permanent statues of worship to which they could go to.

Life was hard and tough for the Indo-Iranians and thus the strongest amongst them survived. The strong exerted pressure on the weak by fighting, stealing and sometimes killing them. The poor and those who were not so strong, were trampled upon by the others who were rich and powerful.

There was much unhappiness, chaos and confusion in the land of our very remote ancestors. Hence some of the wise people prayed for a messenger from God, who would show them the Light in order to help them all to lead a happy, peaceful life.

Nearly three and half thousand years ago, the prayers of the people were answered. God having heard the prayers and having seen the despair of the people, sent upon the earth, a very special person. A child was born into the noble Spitaman family somewhere around the Aral sea. The parents named their child ZARATHUSHTRA, who when he grew up, taught his people how to live happily and in peace. His teachings formed the basis of a religion which we, to this day follow.

SHORT LIFE SKETCH OF PROPHET ZARATHUSHTRA

Long ago in a beautiful lush green area, somewhere around the Aral sea, or perhaps further north-east, a special baby boy was born. His mother Dughdova (milk-maid) and father Pourushaspa (one who has many horses), named their child ZARATHUSHTRA (keeper of camels).

Before ZARATHUSHTRA was born, his parents knew his importance through dreams that they both had. The parents knew that very special care was to be taken of their boy. The wise LORD AHURA MAZDA, guarded the mother and child, for he knew that one day this holy child would grow up and teach his people a new and better way of living, a new religion.

It is said that 3 days before ZARATHUSHTRA was born, a bright light appeared around the house in which his mother lived. Many people recognized the importance of this wonderful happening, but this made the wicked people jealous and unhappy.

All newly born babies cry, but we are told that ZARATHUSHTRA smiled when he was born, for he knew at that early age that AHURA MAZDA wanted his people to be happy and content.

Soon after his birth, the wicked people tried to kill him as they did not like the coming of this special child. They knew that when this child would grow up, he would teach his people how to live honest, happy and peaceful lives and this the wicked people did not like.

First they tried to burn the baby, but the wood did not catch fire. Next, the wicked people placed baby Zarathushtra in the midst of a running herd of cattle, and later amongst wild horses. But each time he was protected by MAZDA who made a bull and then a stallion stand over the baby, so that neither the cattle nor the horses could trample over him. However, God knew of the tricks that the wicked people would try to play and so protected the baby.

ZARATHUSHTRA grew up to be a very intelligent boy. It is said that he had some priestly training. As ZARATHUSHTRA grew older, he wanted to know more about Ahura Mazda the lord of wisdom.

He did not understand why some people were in pain, whilst others remained well and happy or why some people were wicked? As a young boy, he pondered over these questions for a long time but no answer came to him. At the age of twenty, in a confused state, he left his home in search of truth.

He wandered around the hills and valleys of his country searching for answers to his questions. Though he was confused he knew that one day lord would talk to him and give him all the right answers. He felt the presence of God around him and this made him feel very happy.

10 years later, at the age of 30, something very unusual and special happened to him. One morning, ZARATHUSHTRA went down to the river DAITYA to fetch water. When he waded into the waters, he saw a shining being standing on the other side of the river. Nervously ZARATHUSHTRA waded towards this figure and asked who he was. The bright shining being said that it was VOHU MANAH- THE GOOD MIND. God had sent vohu manah to bring ZARATHUSHTRA into his presence because ZARATHUSHTRA had been chosen by God to spread his message.

ZARATHUSHTRA wonderstruck saw God's own court and all the beings who help him in running our beautiful world. He understood that AHURA MAZDA made the world perfect and good, but it was AHRIMAN - the evil force, who had brought about disease, destruction and death in this world. He also understood that AHURA MAZDA'S creations would win victory over the forces of evil in the end. God told ZARATHUSHTRA to be his messenger. Zarathushtra learnt from God that good thoughts, good words and good deeds are the strongest weapons to fight evil.

Upon learning this, ZARATHUSHTRA waded out of the waters, extremely happy that God had spoken to him. He received many such messages from God.

Upto his 40th year, ZARATHUSHTRA had only one follower, his cousin MAIDHYOIMANHA. Although ZARATHUSHTRA wanted to share God's message with the others other people did not believe him as they thought that they were not strong enough to fight evil.

In his 42nd year, ZARATHUSHTRA'S message was heard by the good king VISHTASPA and queen HUTAOSA, who were wise and brave. We are told that one day king VISHTASPA'S favourite horse fell ill. The king became sad and tried all sorts of medicines to cure his horse, but to no avail. Then ZARATHUSHTRA who had been put in prison due to the jealousy of the courtiers, came to the king and offered to cure his horse. ZARATHUSHTRA succeeded in miraculously curing the king's favourite horse, but only after certain conditions were agreed upon. The main condition was that the king and his people should accept ZARATHUSHTRA'S message upon curing of the horse. King VISHTASPA thus became the first royal patron of Zarathushtra's new religion.

We are told that Zarathushtra had 6 children and when he was 77 years old, he was killed by an evil Turanian warrior whilst he was praying.

The message of God, through Zarathushtra, spread far and wide. This message became a religion which came to be known as ZORASTRIANISM. Zarathushtra taught for many years, spreading his teachings of truth and happiness for all.

THE TRADITIONAL PARSI SARI....GARA

Every parsi girl that gets married surely takes two things from her mother to her new home...those two things are the 2 types of traditional parsi saris....one is the kore ni sari which is a sari having a richly embroidered border that is the kore... and the second must have sari for every parsi woman is the garo...

The garo is the traditional parsi sari which is heavily embroidered with intricate designs. The embroidery may be done on silk, satin or georgette materials. The price of garo depends on the intricacy of the embroidery and also on how old it is... the more old the gara sari is more value it has...because in olden days the ladies took great pain to hand stitch these garas which are usually machine-embroidered these days. Usually there are a lot of Chinese characters embroidered in the garas like Chinese birds, fishermen and Chinese houses. We see this influence because gara embroidery originates from china with whom our ancestors used to trade in ancient times. Gara saris look best in rich colours like red, wine, purple or black on which the white coloured thread used for embroidery just shines through.

If you see the pictures of gara saris that I have posted you will see how richly embroidered they are and you can imagine how much hard work goes into the making of a gara especially if it is hand made. http://www.thehorizons.com/craft/gara/main.htm This is a lovely site which gives us some very useful information on the gara sari.

DID WE ZORASTRIANS EVER CONVERT?

A few days ago my friend Manju asked me that though Parsis never convert but you people must have converted at one point of time right? And to tell my readers frankly I never knew the answer to this question. So I researched a bit on net and I found a very useful writeup which answered Manju's question of whether parsis ever converted...

The answer to this question is that no... Prophet Zarathushtra never converted anyone because in the time era that he lived none of the great religions of the world had been established yet, so there was no religion from which Zarathushtra could have converted anybody.

For deeper understanding I recommend my reader friends to go to this site written by MR. RONI. K. KHAN in which he has given a detailed understanding of whether zorastrians ever converted people.
